So- this is my second blog post, you guys!! I'm including the short paper that I wrote for Communications class. Please don't pick it apart. :) This is a great example of how technology has changed the work of communicatoras and influenced the training that they need in their daily jobs these days!  I hope you like the pink font. I'm into pink lately besides my usual neutral white.

Facebook Influenced, Changed, and Affected Communication from News Organizations

According to “Module Overview,” “Facebook has also become a platform for the news industry and other communicators to use to brand their products and messages” (Learning Module Four, 2019). Additionally, “many news organizations now have both written and unwritten policies regarding the cultural expectation that their employees will maintain individual Facebook pages as well as contributing to the news organization’s page” (Learning Module Four, 2019). Also, “for example, the Associated Press requires its employees to identify themselves as employees of the company on any social media platform they use so that there is no confusion about who they work for even if they are using the social media platform for purely personal use” (Learning Module Four, 2019). In addition, “the news company has been known to tell employees when they need to remove something from their Facebook page because it conflicts with company standards and image” (Learning Module Four, 2019). All of this change has influenced and affected communication from news organizations and “traditional reporting practices of knocking on doors and making phone calls are not always done this way; however, they are still needed to supplement information found in social media” (Learning Module Four, 2019). Besides just “using material from an individual’s Facebook page, journalists and communicators can use video, photos, and audio to help package stories online and in social media” (Learning Module Four, 2019).

Facebook’s Effect on Advertising and Public Relations of Major Companies
Facebook certainly has affected advertising and public relations arms of major companies as they interact with audiences. Companies such as Red Bull, Ford Motor Co., and the New England-based companies of Dunkin’ Donuts and T.J. Maxx are only a few examples of the like. Red Bull “uses athletes to promote a lifestyle versus product images and they don’t respond to social media’s comments and it works for them” (Moth, 2013). On the other hand, Dunkin’ Donuts “uses interactions between its customers and active statuses with fun challenges and sweepstakes tied to its marketing campaign” (Sohn, 2012). Ford Motor Company’s “guru, Scott Monty, put Ford on the map for social media by coming up with an ad campaign for the Fiesta in 2009 choosing 100 drivers to drive the car for a year with free gas, insurance, and video cameras, as well as asked to post/tweet reviews about it along the way” (Laskowski, 2013). T.J. Maxx is doing quite the opposite with its advertising and according to Bhattacharyya, “it’s focusing on growing physical locations and anything digital, such as on Instagram, is promoting people to stores, primarily because shoppers come here to ‘look’ for bargains and they don’t know what they’re searching for, unlike other retail locations” (2018). All of these have definitely evolved in their advertising tactics.

Communication Research
There are many skills that communication workers need to develop in their jobs due to the fast pace of changing times, according to technology writer Brian Reid (2012) (“Module Overview,” 2019). Reid goes on to state that “we may live in a multimedia age, but we generate more written words than those in this profession ever have’” (2012, para. 3) (“Module Overview,” 2019). Developing skills that will help communicators and benefit users of digital products by communicating in itself, knowledge of social media use, and knowing how to be safe online is useful in open culture “for growth” (“Open Culture,” N.d.). Social media has definitely changed communication for news production and major retailers everywhere.
